The Quran mentions sabr (patience) and its derivatives over 90 times, underscoring its foundational importance in Islamic faith. Far from mere passive endurance, sabr encompasses perseverance in obedience, restraint from sin, steadfastness in trials, and complete trust in Allah’s wisdom. It pairs often with prayer, gratitude, and tawakkul (reliance on Allah), forming a comprehensive spiritual toolkit for believers.
Allah commands sabr directly, promises immense rewards for it, and assures His companionship to the patient. The Quran illustrates sabr through prophetic stories, presenting it as a mark of true believers and a path to success in this world and the Hereafter. As Allah declares:
“O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.” (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:153)
This divine assurance—that Allah is with the patient—appears multiple times (e.g., 2:153, 2:155, 8:46), offering profound comfort amid hardships.
Key Quranic Verses on Sabr and Their Meanings
The Quran categorizes sabr in various contexts: seeking help in difficulties, rewards for perseverance, and commands to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and believers.
- Seeking Help Through Sabr and Prayer
“O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, it is difficult except for the humbly submissive [to Allah].” (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:45)
Similar in 2:153 (quoted above).
Tafsir highlights that sabr and salah are primary tools for overcoming trials. Prayer connects the heart to Allah, while sabr provides inner strength. This is especially vital in adversity, as true patience comes from humility before Allah.
- Glad Tidings for the Patient in Trials
“And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient, who, when disaster strikes them, say, ‘Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return.’ Those are the ones upon whom are blessings from their Lord and mercy. And it is those who are the [rightly] guided.” (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:155-157)
This passage promises blessings, mercy, and guidance for those who respond to calamity with “Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un” and sabr.
- Unlimited Reward for the Patient
“Indeed, the patient will be given their reward without account.” (Surah Az-Zumar 39:10)
The patient receive boundless reward, emphasizing sabr’s elevated status.
- Allah Loves and is With the Patient
“And obey Allah and His Messenger, and do not dispute… And be patient. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.” (Surah Al-Anfal 8:46)
Repeated assurances (e.g., 3:146, 8:66) affirm Allah’s special nearness to the sabirin.
- Sabr Leads to Victory and Leadership
“And We made from among them leaders guiding by Our command when they were patient and [when] they were certain of Our signs.” (Surah As-Sajdah 32:24)
Patience combined with yaqin (certainty in faith) elevates believers to leadership.
- Commands to the Prophet for Sabr
“So be patient, [O Muhammad], as were the resolute among the messengers…” (Surah Al-Ahqaf 46:35)
“And be patient, [O Muhammad], and your patience is not but through Allah.” (Surah An-Nahl 16:127)
These remind that even prophetic patience draws strength from Allah alone.
Other notable verses include:
- Surah Hud 11:115: “And be patient, for indeed, Allah does not allow to be lost the reward of the doers of good.”
- Surah Al-Inshirah 94:5-6: “For indeed, with hardship [will be] ease. Indeed, with hardship [will be] ease.”
- Surah Luqman 31:17: Advice to endure whatever befalls with sabr.
Types of Sabr Derived from the Quran
Scholars identify three main types from Quranic contexts:
- Sabr in Obedience — Persevering in acts of worship despite difficulty (e.g., fasting, prayer).
- Sabr in Refraining from Sin — Restraining desires and avoiding prohibitions.
- Sabr in Afflictions — Enduring hardships, loss, or illness without complaint.
The highest form is “sabr jameel” (beautiful patience)—calm, graceful endurance without lamenting Allah’s decree.
Prophetic Stories Illustrating Sabr
The Quran vividly portrays sabr through prophets’ lives, calling their narratives “the best of stories” (Surah Yusuf 12:3).
- Prophet Ayyub (Job, peace be upon him)
Afflicted with prolonged illness, loss of wealth, and family, yet he remained steadfast. Allah praises: “Indeed, We found him patient. An excellent servant! Indeed, he constantly turned [to Allah].” (Surah Sad 38:44)
His story teaches that sabr in severe physical and emotional trial leads to divine healing and reward. - Prophet Ya’qub (Jacob, peace be upon him)
Upon losing Yusuf and later Binyamin, and facing his sons’ deception, he responded: “Beautiful patience! Perhaps Allah will bring them to me all together.” (Surah Yusuf 12:18, 83)
Known as “sabr jameel,” his trust in Allah’s plan culminated in family reunion. - Prophet Yusuf (Joseph, peace be upon him)
Betrayed by brothers, enslaved, imprisoned unjustly—yet he persevered with integrity, refraining from sin and trusting Allah. His patience elevated him to power in Egypt. - Prophet Maryam (Mary, peace be upon her)
Facing accusations during pregnancy, she remained silent in obedience to Allah, pointing to infant Isa (Jesus) who defended her miraculously. - The Ulul Azm Prophets (Messengers of Firm Resolve)
Including Nuh, Ibrahim, Musa, Isa, and Muhammad (peace be upon them all), they faced rejection and persecution but persevered, as commanded: “So be patient as the messengers of firm resolve were patient.”
These stories show sabr transforms trials into triumphs, purifying the soul and drawing Allah’s aid.
